Sofa « à la Turque » stamped by Philippe Joseph Pluvinet, circa 1755, reproduced by the reference book by Jean Nicolay, L’art et la manière des maîtres ébénistes français au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1956 , p. 377, fig. C.

Philippe Joseph Pluvinet is one of the most talented seat-makers of the second half of the 18th century. His style is imbued with lightness and the quality of his production is still very sought-after. A magnificent sofa from him is kept at the Carnavalet Museum in Paris (inv. MB453, and another one in the Cleveland Museum of Art collection from the Andrew R. and Martha Holden Jennings Fund (inv. 1979.6). He received master in 1754 and made chairs in both rococo and neo-classical design, thus mastering both styles in a very confident way. Based in the Rue de Cléry, his output ranged from the most restrained seat furniture to the most elaborate and luxurious pieces.
